Sri Lanka’s health indicators have over the past few decades been above the regional average. For further improvement, health system needs to focus more towards patient centred quality care and patient safety.

Even though most of the hospitals in the country have tested various types of quality concepts, they have failed in maintaining a continuous improvement due to various reasons. Major reason identified in the system was the lack of continuous professional development for the provision of continuous quality improvement in healthcare throughout the country. This is mainly due to lack of trainers in the field of healthcare quality and safety. This enlightened the urgent need of systemic implementation of steps to develop capable master trainers in the provision of continuous quality improvement and maintain sustainability at provincial levels and peripheral level.

Accordingly, Directorate for the Quality and safety has taken necessary steps to commence a program of training of trainers in continuous quality improvement which aims to develop a person’s capabilities and capacities of imparting training to others as a skilled professional in quality improvement.

Further DHQS developed a manual for master trainers in 2015 with the collaboration of Ministry of Health in all three language.
