Guidelines have a range of purposes, intended to improve effectiveness and quality of care, to decrease variations in clinical practice and to decrease costly and preventable mistakes and adverse events. They generally include statements of expected practice; provide benchmarks or standards against which individuals can audit; compare and potentially improve their practices.

In 2010 ministry of health in collaboration with JICA developed a series of guidelines that to improve quality of care ranging from hospitals, campaigns, preventive sector and special training centers in Sri Lanka.

DHQS has been involved in development of clinical and quality related guideline since 2012. Its role consists of conducting expert committee meeting with the participation of relevant stake holders, appointing necessary sub committees, coordination among stakeholders and to carry out the printing. Further DHQS is hoping to create a platform to make available all the guidelines that produced in the country.

  • Preparation of guideline on management and designing of Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD)
    • Five consultative meetings were held experts consists of Microbiologists, Administrators, Bio medical Engineers, Structural Engineers, Architects, Nursing staff
    • Four subcommittee meeting were held
  • Development of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Safety Guideline
    • Final consultative meeting to be held to finalize the drafted document
    • Administrative concurrence is needed to be obtained
    • Series of consultative meetings were held and a draft was prepared
  • Development of National Guideline on Infection Prevention and Control
    • 8 subcommittees to be convened in order to discuss and adapt core components
    • Another 11 subcommittees to be appointed
    • Future plan need to be prepared

One consultative meeting was held with the participation of College of Microbiologists, College of Physicians, College of Pediatricians, College of Surgeons government hospital staff that includes hospital administrators, Infection Control Medical Officers and Infection Control Nursing Officers, QMU staff and representatives from private.
