The National Programme for Healthcare Quality and Safety has been implemented throughout the country since many years. “Clinical Audit” is considered as an important aspect in improving quality and safety healthcare to patients seeking care from the institutions.

Clinical audit is defined as a quality improvement process that seeks to improve patient care and outcomes through systematic review of care against explicit criteria and the implementation of change.

Simply clinical audit is described as a method used to improve quality of patient care in a wide variety of topics. It assesses whether current clinical practice meets the expected level of performance and if it doesn‘t takes measures to come to expected standards. Where indicated, changes are implemented at an individual, team, or service level, and further monitoring is used to confirm improvement in healthcare delivery.

Therefore, number of clinical audit performed for quarter has been included as an indicator in assessing the performance in quality and safety in the performance review format issued for Line Ministry hospitals and Provincial Ministry Hospitals by the Directorate of Healthcare Quality and Safety. But the number of performed clinical audit per quarter was very low due to the inadequate knowledge on clinical audits among medical professionals.

Therefore, DHQS with the objective of improving the knowledge and skills related to the Clinical Audit among medical administrators, consultants, medical officers and nursing officers in Quality Management Units who are the responsible persons to conduct clinical audits, initiated clinical audit workshops.

DHQS conducts three Workshops (two days) per annum, which consist of lectures, group discussions and group work with participation of spectrum of health care professionals ( medical administrators, consultants, medical officers, para-medical professional and staff nurses) from ten hospitals per workshop. Each participants is awarded with a certificate of participation.

 2019 DHQS conducts three Workshops
